SMITHSONIAN CHANNEL™ LAUNCHES iPAD® APP
Free App Features Story Space, An Interactive Drag-and-Drop
Playlist Builder That Allows Users to Create Customized Video Line-Up
New York, NY – March 1, 2012 – Cable television network Smithsonian Channel is introducing a new way to watch, find and explore its vast programming catalogue with the launch of its first iPad app. Featuring hundreds of videos, including both short stories and a selection of full-length episodes and specials, the free app was designed not only for existing Smithsonian Channel fans, but also for those yet to discover the network.
Smithsonian Channel celebrates the American experience with programming that entertains, educates and inspires by exploring topics such as science, nature, space and more. Among the many fun and engaging features of the app is Story Space, a brand new way for users to create their own video playlist out of short stories and full episodes from Smithsonian Channel programming. This interactive, drag-and-drop playlist-builder allows users to find stories based on their favorite topics, create their own channel, then sit back and watch hours of video.
For those looking for long-form content, the app features a rotating selection of full episodes. At the heart of the user experience, however, are the hundreds of short-form videos, each telling a short 2 to 5 minute story from a Smithsonian Channel program. In this app, curiosity is rewarded and discovery is at a user's fingertips. And with the constant addition of new content, a user is guaranteed to find something new every time they open this app.
Other app features include:
- Smart auto-play mode to continuously play related videos
- Facebook, Twitter, and email sharing capabilities
- AirPlay integration including support for AirPlay mirroring
- Channel Finder to check on-air availability
- Notifications for new and featured content
- On-air schedule
The Smithsonian Channel app is available for free from the App Store on iPad or at www.itunes.com/appstore.
The app was designed and developed in collaboration with the design firm Potion.
