MARIO CANTONE TAKES HIS SOLD OUT BROADWAY TRIUMPH LAUGH WHORE TO SHOWTIME ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

Special Will Have Several Prime Time Airings Throughout the Holiday Weekend

April 15, 2005 - Fresh from his critically-acclaimed, limited Broadway engagement, Mario Cantone brings his one-man variety show LAUGH WHORE to SHOWTIME in a special comedy event premiering Saturday, May 28 at 9:00 PM (ET/PT).    The special will also air Sunday at 8:30 PM and Monday, May 30 at 9:00 PM (ET/PT).

Taped live before a sold-out audience from New York’s legendary Cort Theatre, comedian Cantone offers his caustic, poignant, and always hilarious take on New York cab drivers, the gay subtext of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and growing up Italian American. In addition to his comic riffs, Cantone unleashes his dead-on impersonations of some of the entertainment world’s greatest divas including Judy, Liza, Tina and Cher, as well as several show-stopping songs showcasing Cantone’s musical range.

“I’ve been a fan of Mario Cantone since his first appearance in Love! Valour! Compassion!,” said Robert Greenblatt, President of Entertainment.   “His one-man show has been gestating for a few years and when I was approached about getting involved in Laugh Whore on Broadway, I jumped at the chance. I think people will be impressed by the range of his talents.”

Produced on Broadway by SHOWTIME, in association with Jonathan Burkhart, this marks SHOWTIME’s first foray as a theatrical producer. LAUGH WHORE is written by Mario Cantone with original musical numbers composed by tick, tick…BOOM actor Jerry Dixon, with additional music by Dixon, Cantone and Harold Lubin. Tom Kitt serves as musical director. LAUGH WHORE made its Broadway debut at the Cort Theatre in New York on October 24, 2004, under the direction of two-time Tony® Award-winning director Joe Mantello (Take Me Out and Assassins).

Mario Cantone’s most recent Broadway credit was co-starring in Stephen Sondheim’s Tony® Award-winning musical Assassins. He also received acclaim for his Broadway performance in Love! Valour! Compassion! and his off-Broadway performance in The Crumple Zone. Cantone is best known to television audiences for his role as Anthony Marantino, the ruthless gay wedding stylist on “Sex and the City.” He got his start on television hosting the local New York children’s show “Steampipe Alley.” In addition, he has appeared on many programs on Comedy Central.

“LAUGH WHORE” was taped for SHOWTIME at the Cort Theatre on Broadway on December 11, 2004 and was directed for television by Paul Miller. The executive producers of the show are Kimber Rickabaugh, Paul Miller and Jay Larkin. Rickabaugh also serves as the show’s producer.
