LARRY BIRKHEAD ON ANNA NICOLE SMITH DRUG TRIAL: "THE AMOUNT OF PRESCRIPTIONS WAS OVERWHELMING TO ME"
October 16, 2009 (Los Angeles, CA)-- ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT's KEVIN FRAZIER sat down with Larry Birkhead yesterday in Los Angeles for an all-new interview to air tonight, Friday, October 16th.
Birkhead talks about Anna Nicole Smith's prescription drug use, admitting that he was aware she was taking more than advised. "Sometimes if one said take two pills three times a day, she'd take four pills six times a day," he says.
Recalling the 2004 American Music Awards, he says, "The night before she went into seizures and the next day she wanted to present this award so she took something to offset the seizures and it caused her to be loopy. The amounts of prescriptions were kind of overwhelming to me, not being used to that kind of stuff. But to see some of the things that I saw it didn't make me happy, and that was what kind of led up to some of the tension that led to our breakup."
On whether Anna took drugs while pregnant with Dannielynn, "During the time she was pregnant she was on a treatment plan and the doctors were supposed to be in charge of that. In one situation she abandoned one plan that was given to her at the hospital and then everything kinda went haywire from there. Then our relationship broke up, that was the end of that, then all I could do was kind of hope for the best."
When asked how Dannielynn is today, he says, "Being a dad's the greatest and it still seems like the first day and the amount of fun we're having, she's telling me what to do now and giving me orders, and she's growing up so fast and looking just like her mom. She's starting to understand a lot about how things work."
Birkhead tells ET he hopes for resolution in the Anna Nicole Smith drug trial and says it is hard to revisit the past now that the trial has begun. "It is tough when you're trying to be a dad," he says. "I think Anna would be proud of the way Dannielynn is growing up. There's no replacement for Anna, but if you look at her some days, she is Anna -- she's the closest you can get to that, and it's tough."
In the end, Larry says, "I just hope that if someone did something wrong to Anna that they're responsible for it."
