2017-18 NFL ON CBS Regular-Season and Post-Season Ratings Highlights

 

2017 Regular-Season Games

 

  •  
    • CBS had the highest-rated and most-watched NFL telecast of the 2017 regular-season with the CBS National game on 12/17/17- New England @ Pittsburgh (15.2/30, 26.9 million viewers).  

 

  •  
    • The CBS Thanksgiving Day game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Dallas Cowboys averaged 26.3 million viewers and was the second most-watched NFL telecast of the 2017 regular season.

 

  •  
    • For the 17 weeks of the 2017 Regular-Season (9/7/17-12/31/18) CBS’s NFL telecasts on Sunday afternoon (and Thanksgiving) were seen in all-or-part* by an estimated 145.6 million viewers.

 

  • +1% more than FOX’s Sunday Afternoon and Thanksgiving game (144.8 million viewers)

 

  • +10% more than NBC’s primetime games (132.3 million viewers)

 

  • +63% more than ESPN’s Monday Night Football games- (89.4 million viewers)

 

*watched at least six minutes of coverage

 

 

  • CBS’s 4:25 PM National Games averaged an 11.5 HH rating in the 2017 regular-season and had a +12% rating advantage over the NFL primetime broadcast package on NBC (11.5 vs. 10.3).

 

  • 2017 marked the 17th consecutive season (starting in 2001) that the CBS National game on Sunday afternoon has out-rated the NFL primetime broadcast package.

 

 

2017-18 Post-Season

 

  • Last season’s AFC Championship Game between New England and Jacksonville at 3:00 PM averaged 44.1 million viewers. CBS’s AFC Championship Game viewership was +4% higher than FOX’s 42.3 million for the NFC Championship in the primetime game window.

 

  • 2018 was the third consecutive year the AFC Championship game averaged more viewers than the NFC Championship game

 

  • The past season’s AFC Championship Game on CBS was the highest-rated (24.3/37 HH rating/share) and most-watched program (44.1 million viewers) besides Super Bowl programming on NBC during the 2017-18 television season.

 

 

The AFC Championship’s 44.1 million viewer average was:

  • +568% higher than the fifth and final game of the 2018 Stanley Cup (Washington def. Vegas) - 6.6 million

  • +171% higher than the fourth and final game of the 2018 NBA Finals (Golden State def. Cleveland) - 16.3 million

  • +56% higher than the seventh and final game of the 2017 World Series between the L.A. Dodgers and Houston - 28.3 million



CBS’s four NFL Playoff games in 2018 averaged 31.8 million viewers and were:

  • +563% higher than the five games of the 2018 Stanley Cup between Washington and Vegas - 4.8 million

  • +80% higher than the four games of the 2018 NBA Finals between Golden State and Cleveland - 17.7 million

  • +68% higher than the seven games of the 2017 World Series between the L.A. Dodgers and Houston - 18.9 million

 

For the 20 weeks of the 2017-18 NFL Regular and Post-Season (9/7/17-1/22/18) CBS’s NFL telecasts (excluding TNF) were seen in all or part* by an estimated 156.4 million viewers.

 

  • Ahead of FOX’s games (156.4 million viewers)

 

  • +12% more than NBC’s games (139.2 million viewers)
